Le Chic En Rose

Diaries of an independent traveller

We’ve often been on the road at Easter time but this year we’ll be spending it with family and friends in Perth. Our seasons “Down Under” being in reverse we’re enjoying the pleasant autumnal weather – crisper nights but still sunny days.

Going through the photo vaults I came across some lovely photos of a day out in the Yorkshire Dales a few years back when visiting our UK families at Easter time. The green countryside and profusion of daffodils sum up my childhood memories of Easter. We drove up to the pretty village of Kettlewell and had lunch at the Blue Bell Inn (the waitress was from a small country town in New South Wales!). We used to go here a lot when I was growing up as my late Nanna knew the then owners. It had all the character and charm I remembered – a great little spot for a welcoming pub lunch.

After a quick walk round the village to walk off our rather hearty lunch, we headed off back over the moors. Our drive took us into Upper Wharfedale via the quaintly named Hubberholme and its little church, then over the top to Wensleydale calling by the stunning Aysgarth Falls before wending our way down the dales back towards Ripon and Harrogate.

Wishing everyone a very happy Easter!

    1. Kettlewell is a delightful spot isn’t it Jo? Happy memories of childhood visits there and this was a lovely day out a few visits to the UK ago! Hope you had a great time in the Algarve and have a lovely Easter too! We’ve had a busy few days but a little quieter for the rest of the break so catching up on the blog now! πŸ™‚

James and his lady arrived last night so there was a bit of scurrying around but it’s all peaceful now. πŸ™‚

        1. We had the family here yesterday – great fun but spent the morning tidying up and some of my Easter decorations “disappeared”! Granddaughter 1 found them in her Easter basket last night – to her credit she was very upset as she hadn’t meant to take them home with her and hoped I wouldn’t be upset!! Have a lovely relaxing day! πŸ™‚

  2. Aysgarth Falls – one of my favourites. They filmed a scene from ‘Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves’ at this location.

    1. Yes it’s a beautiful place isn’t it – we were lucky to live so close by as children. Lunch at the Blue Bell Inn was always a highlight – they served delicious ice cream in silver bowls! Didn’t appreciate the countryside back then as much as I would now! Wishing you a very happy Easter!

Beautiful photos Rosemary. Nothing like the Yorkshire Dales in the spring. Are you from Yorkshire then? I have a feeling I should know this already, but having a senior moment!!

    1. No problem at all Jude – yes originally am from Yorkshire (born in Sheffield, grew up in Leeds, parents now live in Harrogate but I moved down to London at 18 to go to uni). In fact I have connections all over the place – my dad’s family are predominantly from London and the south east with a bit of Scots and my mum’s are Yorkshire via North Wales! I grew up on outings to the Yorkshire Dales and still try to get there on my visits even if it’s not all the way up to Kettlewell! Bolton Abbey Tea rooms are a favourite too! Hoping for some nice weather as we’re coming over again at the end of the month. Wishing you a very happy Easter! πŸ™‚

I used to know Leeds quite well, I am from Wakefield originally, but like you left around the age of 18. Not to uni though, I was a bit of a traveller in those days! I worked in Sheffield for 6 years and went to uni there as a mature student. A nice city.

        1. I know Wakefield well from the train station – Wakefield Westgate last stop before Leeds! Have hardly been back to Sheffield – we only lived near there when I was a baby then moved further north to a little town called Silsden near Keighley and then Leeds. One day will go back and check all these places out!

Incidentally, I promised I would introduce a lovely lady called Gilda Baxter to you. She was in Perth on holiday recently and I mentioned you. She asked for a link but I struggle to reach her current posts sometimes. If I give you this link would you go and say hi please, when you have a moment? Thanks, hon!

    1. Yes of course Jo – just seen this message now! We’ll be setting off for the Uk in a week and a half so no real time to meet up (she may well not be in Perth now anyway) but I’ll certainly connect up and say hello! πŸ™‚

I hadn’t envisaged a meeting, hon. Just to say hi πŸ™‚ Is Easter Monday a holiday in Oz? Probably not ! Sending lazy hugs. I don’t have much planned today.

        1. Have said hi Jo – looks like she was here earlier in the month just up the road from me! Thanks for the link! Yes it is a public holiday today – we’ve been clearing out the loft above our garage, which hopefully is being renovated whilst we’re away! Other than a walk by the sea a quiet day. Enjoy the rest of the Easter break πŸ™‚

  7. The village looks gorgeous Rosemary and the drive sounds lovely – I’ve noted it, think this is something we would enjoy doing sometime, I love Yorkshire. Hope your Easter is going well.

    1. I’m sure you’d love Kettlewell Joy – there are some gorgeous places round the Dales and delightful country pubs! We’re in a major clearing out mode at present as our house sitters are going to renovate our attic room above the garage when we’re away (he’s a carpenter). Am just on a break now but we caught up with our Perth family and friends over the weekend. Hope you’ve had a lovely Easter too! πŸ™‚

        1. Yes it seems like a win win situation Joy – just hope the pets will be ok I’m like an over anxious parent when I go away and fret about them! They’ve always been fine and are well socialised so should be no problems! πŸ˜ƒ
