We are the midst of a heatwave here in Perth this Christmas – it was 41 degrees earlier this afternoon so we have stayed inside with the air conditioning doing its best to cool us down! By contrast I’ve been exchanging messages with a good friend who lives in southern Norway. There they have been experiencing heavy snowfall – 80cms in two days last week and still snowing!
Fortunately we always have our main family get-together on Christmas Eve – we started the tradition years ago soon after we moved “Down Under’ as it seemed more sensible to eat later in the day when normally it is far cooler. This sultry Christmas has been an exception though and the evenings are continuing to be hot and sultry.
I must apologise for my absence on the blog of late – life just seems to have got very busy. However with the searing heat continuing into the middle of next week and Perth in the midst of a Covid scare we will be staying close to home for a while so I will have plenty of time to catch up on the blogosphere.
In the meantime here is a preview of some photos taken on a day trip to Lancelin recently (about an hour and a half north of Perth).

Thanks Suzanne! Merry Christmas to you and Pierre too. I know it can’t be much fun when it it is cold and freezing but to be quite honest I would prefer a “white Christmas” right now. Lancelin was a lovely day out – we hadn’t been for nearly 30 years even though it’s really just up the road from here. Wishing you all the best for the rest of the festive season 🙂

Well you are heading into Boxing Day now! Looks like you had a lovely meal with the family – your table looks very festive. Thanks Jude – yes always try and mix up the colour schemes. Last year was quite soft and pastel but I went with the reds and golds this year. We’re now into Boxing Day and the searing heat continues. I’m typing this upstairs in the air conditioned part of the house. We have fans downstairs and in fact if we keep the blinds down in the patio area it helps to cool the rest of the house so can’t complain. Mlle has just come over with a friend to use the pool. Yes unfortunately my hints that Santa might like a glass of something stronger to fortify him went unheard and he was consigned to having milk! He did get oatmilk though in case he was lactose intolerant! Wishing you and your family a very happy rest of the festive season and yes here’s hoping for a much better 2022 for the whole world. It certainly is Jo! Even though I’ve lived “Down Under” for over 30 years it never seems right to have a warm Christmas though it’s not normally this hot! Indoors for different reasons – enjoy the rest of the festivities xx 🙂

The same here Jo though today Monsieur has been watching the cricket on the tv. May venture into the garden this evening – it’s nearly 5.30pm now and is still 42 degrees! 😦 Still a glass of chilled vino may help …….Happy Boxing Day! xx 🙂

Is that recent snow Jo? My dad and brother didn’t mention any snow on Christmas Day! There was some in early December with Storm Barra I think. I remember having our planes de-iced when we were over in March 2018 (Beast From the East) – such extremes of weather! No respite for us today alas – it’s 2.25 in the afternoon and currently 41 degress 😦 Have just pushed our friends back an hour (we are having our usual Boxing Day gathering here today) – they were due to arrive at 3pm and it’s just way too hot so we all agreed later was better! Off to try and cool down in the pool soon. Hope all is well with you! xx

The snow arrived overnight on Saturday, Rosemay- hard to keep track of the days! – and it was just starting to settle as we went to the airport. We had a very cheery bus driver at 6.20 in the morning who told us there was lots out where he lived, by the airport, and he wasn’t wrong. Looking at the forecast this morning it just says fog so I don’t know what it will be like. Messy, I expect! My two are at a wedding near Rotherham today so I’m hoping it’s not too bad. This world of contrasts, hey?

Very much so Jo! Just had a long chat with my dad on Skype. My brother drove him over to Ilkley to visit my aunt in her care home on Boxing Day and then they drove on to Baildon where she is shortly going to be moved to a nursing home. There was no snow in Harrogate but a lot on the hills round the airport at Yeadon. Today is grey, cold and foggy in Harrogate. Dad wishes he could be in sunshine and I wish it could be cooler here though possibly not fog and grey skies! The sea breeze finally got a short look-in this afternoon which has taken the edge off the excessive heat (4 days with over 40 degrees maximums) and it will gradually cool down so by Thursday the maximum will only be in the high 20s – bliss! Hope all is well back in the Algarve xx 🙂

Lovely outdoor table setting. We had every intention of having our Christmas eve dinner and then Christmas lunch in the patio, but it was far too hot, so had to move the celebrations indoors. Wishing you a wonderful 2022

I didn’t realise it can get so hot in Perth… 41 degrees C is a scorcher.
We are currently in Rio and loving the summer weather here. Like you I have not been very diligent with the blog, but I will catch up on posts in the future. Happy New Year 😘

Thanks Gilda – we always have our dinner on Christmas Eve outside under the patio 🙂 Glad you are enjoying Rio – I saw on Instagram that you are over there for a couple of months. How lovely! Yes it can get very hot in summer in Perth though over 40 is thankfully not common. Unfortunately this was a record breaking heatwave with several days around the 40 mark – the cooling afternoon sea breeze was unable to get in due to a trough sitting off the coast of Perth. We normally only get really hot weather in later January ad February so it is concerning to get such unusually warm weather in December. Also living by the coast we normally benefit from the refreshing breeze known as the “Fremantle Doctor” – it makes a huge difference and once it comes in temperatures go down considerably. To our great relief it cam back last Wednesday and it is now far more pleasant – tops around high 20s to 30 degrees 🙂 Have a lovely trip and a Happy New Year! xx
