Apologies for my lengthy absence from the blog! We are in the midst of major renovations to the kitchen and laundry area and it has been somewhat chaotic to say the least but we are looking forward to the end result!
I did start my series on our recent European trip with a couple of posts about York (see here and here).
Today is a pictorial tour round Harlow Carr Gardens in Harrogate, always a favourite spot for a walk when I’m visiting my family (see here and here for a previous visit in spring and by way of contrast, autumn).
On the day my dad and I visited in April, it was unfortunately rather grey and gloomy but the moody sky did provide a nice contrast to the deep pinks, soft peaches and golden yellow colours of the tulips.
No trip to Harlow Carr would feel complete without an afternoon tea at Betty’s Cafe (one of several in Yorkshire, there is another one in Harrogate on the corner of Montpellier Parade in the town centre). The rainy weather provided the perfect excuse to head indoors and enjoy a delicious Yorkshire cream tea!

That dramatic weather makes your photos even more interesting!

Thanks Kerry – hadn’t realised quite how grey the sky was when I took those photos! A few minutes later it was pouring down so we beat a hasty retreat indoors!

I love Harrogate, I went few years ago to attend a Gastroenterology Conference. Betty’s Café is like an institution, it is so lovely. I have not visited this gardens, the flowers are beautiful 🙂

Harrogate has a huge conference centre Gilda so it is a very popular location! These gardens are a little way out of town but you can reach them by a footpath that leads off the Valley Gardens in the centre of town. It is a picturesque walk through the woods and there is one point where you come across a beautiful panoramic view across the Yorkshire Dales. Also it’s worth knowing there is another Betty’s at Harlow Carr as the one in the centre of town gets very crowded indeed. As you say Betty’s is an institution – this year they celebrate their 100th anniversary (it was founded by a Swiss family who moved to Harrogate!) 🙂

Thanks Suzanne! I knew it would be a bit difficult living in the house whilst the work was going on but even so have found it rather stressful especially with the pets who have had their routines disturbed. The cat has actually coped quite well as she is able to find hiding places upstairs out of the way but the dog gets rather stressed! Today he is being looked after by my friend (she’s been so kind and helpful taking him on several occasions now!). Still 2 to 3 weeks to go but it’s getting there! 🙂

The greys look pretty in the photos! Just didn’t like getting caught in the rain!
