Le Chic En Rose

Diaries of an independent traveller

We have always been drawn to the beautiful cape region of South Western Australia. The Cape Leeuwin Naturaliste Park covers the area from the lighthouse at Cape Naturaliste in the north to the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse in the far south west. There is quite a contrast between the more serene waters and sheltered bays of Geographe Bay in the north (see Sunset At Cape Naturaliste)  and the coast round the corner from Cape Naturaliste lighthouse. Here the  powerful seas and wild winds have given this western coastal area an almighty battering over the years. The beaches are a magnet for the many surfers drawn to the magnificent swell (for experienced surfers only!) and visitors who come for the coastal walks and trails and to admire the ocean.

Explanation of the formation of Canal Rocks in Western Australia

We used to visit Canal Rocks when our 2 daughters were small and have been coming back ever since. The aboriginal name for the rocks is Winjee Sam. The seas and wind have carved an unusual rock pattern into the granite rocks and formed a series of channels or canals. Nowadays a series of wooden walkways and bridges allows you to walk up to the end of the channels and witness first hand the power of the ocean with the waves crashing onto the rocks.

Common sense is required – we have been there on several occasions when the water is breaking over the pathways and you have to be careful not to slip! On the day we were there recently it was comparatively mild and yet you can still see the immense power of the ocean in full force!

The rocks themselves are fascinating – intricate patterns have been carved out into the granite over many centuries.

We were there at the very start of spring and wildflowers were starting to bloom.

On the other side of the rocks away from the walkway and channels you can get a good vantage point of the sea. Monsieur Le Chic couldn’t resist climbing all the way to the top (be careful if you decide to do this!).

Whilst I waited a bit further down he managed to take some fantastic photos of the sea crashing over the rocks below!

    1. Thanks Suzanne – yes I love walks by the sea too! There is something so special about the ocean – I could watch it for hours. Happy the photos came out – it was a wild and blustery day!

My kind of walk Rosemay, though I do prefer them to be a bit warmer. The boardwalks are a good idea. I’ve been walking around Krakow all day and my feet hurt x

    1. Some friends have just come back from Krakow Jo – they loved it but I guess there would be a lot of cobblestones! It was a blustery day at Canal rocks but we love it when it’s like that – we do get plenty of sun in the summer so it’s a refreshing change in the cooler months! Have a wonderful time at the wedding X 🙂

    1. Yes it’s a beautiful place Anabel – very invigorating to walk down by the sea! We have been coming to Canal Rocks for may years – every time we go down to the south west. It’s a beautifully unspoilt place 🙂

  5. Just gorgeous Rosemary, the waves mesmerize me too, nothing better than watching huge breakers crash onto the shore, these look just perfect!! Love the wooden boardwalks too, definitely my kind of walk.

    1. Thanks Joy it is such a lovely and unspoilt place 🙂 The sound of the waves crashing down is wonderful too – pity I can’t add a sound button to the photos (perhaps I should video them next time). There are also lots of rock pools with little crabs in them – our girls loved fossicking around there when they were younger! The boardwalks make it possible to walk further out to sea than you could safely do otherwise – the waves are huge!!

      1. It just looks stunning Rosemary and our kind of walk – our son grumbles a bit but not if there is a boardwalk and those rock pools sound perfect too!! Hope your weekend is going well…

        1. I should have taken some photos of the rockpools Joy – we saw quite a few black crabs it was always a game when our girls were younger to spot them! We are having a lovely spring day though it’s chillier at night (still cool enough to light the wood fire so I’m happy!). My dad said it was quite pleasant yesterday in Yorkshire so hope it is with you too!

    1. Thanks Allane! Yes I think you would love this area – it’s a spectacular coastline and the waves are mesmerising! I took so many photos!!! Am happy to join in with #mondayescapes again as I haven’t had much time this past couple of weeks. I just signed in to go and check out some more posts and then saw your message. I will head over now 🙂 It’s a lovely day here – spring is on the way 🙂 Hope you’re having a lovely Sunday too – I think Oktoberfest starts today though perhaps you avoid it?! Have a great week too 🙂

      1. You’re welcome Rosemary! 😀
Don’t worry, things have been pretty busy around here too.
Yes, the Oktoberfest started on Saturday. No, I dont actually avoid it, we enjoy it a lot haha. I went there on Monday and I am going again today with some friends who are visiting. It seems that everyone decided to visit Munich this week 😀

    1. Thanks Meg – the rocks are fascinating aren’t they? It looks a bit like a modern sculpture but it’s been created by the force of the sea over the centuries!

  8. Hi Rosemary, what a lovely post. I think as a family we would love to go to Canal Rocks – and I can see why you used to go there all the time. Something as stunning can be enjoyed over and over again. And thrown into the dramatic landscape high seas, wildflowers, wooden walkways and the Cape Naturaliste lighthouse – winning formula. I would love to visit here! Thanks for linking up with #MondayEscapes

    1. Thanks Ting! The cape area national park is so beautiful and unspoilt. Our girls loved the rockpools when they were smaller – you can spot crabs and shells in them so it’s great for kids (well away from the huge crashing waves of course you do have to be careful!). There are so many activities for families in this area too, farms, sheep shearing sheds where you can see the sheep being shorn etc plus cheese and chocolate factories. The cafes and restaurants are very family friendly too 🙂 It’s one of my favourites parts of the world and just 3 hours drive away from our home! I’m sure you’d love it as a destination for a family holiday! Have a great week and I’ll check out the new #MondayEscapes later on 🙂

Looks so beautiful! I often say that I prefer big cities over nature and smaller places, but when I see pictures like this, I’m not so sure.

    1. I actually like both! I do like chilling out somewhere quieter after visiting a big city but I also like the vibrancy of a larger place. This area is just 3 hours drive south of Perth, where we live, so is the perfect place for a few days getaway 🙂

  10. Lovely to read about the area, very envious of the spring wildflowers starting to bloom. I’ve just got dying summer flowers to contend with in the UK! I worked and travelled in south west Australia a few years ago (before kids) and have many fond memories of the area so look forward to reading more of your posts. #Mondayescapes

    1. Thanks for calling by to visit me here! #Mondayescapes is a great way to connect with other bloggers – Ting and Allane do a great job coordinating it all! South West WA is so beautiful isn’t it? We emigrated from the UK nearly 25 years ago but now our younger daughter has moved over to London! We do get over to the UK about once a year at present though, so I think we get the best of both worlds 🙂 I love spring and autumn here – spring because it is pleasantly warm and the flowers are so pretty and autumn because the chillier nights and pleasant days are a lovely contrast after the hot summer 🙂 I will head over your way to read your blog again soon – loved your post about the Caledonian sleeper! Thanks for the visit and see you again here soon 🙂

This is mild? Hahaha I do not want to be there on a fierce waves day! I guess I am too used to quiet Mediterranean sea… any kind of ocean seems brave to me 🙂 Nice area to walk around, thanks for sharing. Happy travels and happy spring 🙂

    1. It does get quite a bit wilder on the south western cape Laia – sometimes the water has been splashing over us on the boardwalk! The waves are magnificent down there hence it is a very popular area with surfers. Although we have an Mediterranean climate in Perth and the south west, the Indian ocean is wilder than the Mediterranean sea! Glad you enjoyed the walk and happy travels too 🙂
