Le Chic En Rose

Diaries of an independent traveller

We’re staying in Fremantle this week, one of my favourite places in our south west corner of the world and which we visited last week in our grand tour of the area (Our Adopted Home: Perth and SW Western Australia). The “Little Creatures” in question is not, however, a list of the creepy crawlies that visitors may expect to find in these parts of the world (it’s really not that bad!) but refers to a well known local Australian brewery of the same name. Little Creatures now has several branches throughout the country but started life in 2000 in the port of city of Fremantle. It has been one of our go-to places if we’re down that way for some time now and we visited again a couple of times recently with Mlle our daughter, over from the UK, and last month with my cousin, over from New Zealand. In all our visits I’ve never thought to enquire how the brewery got its name but with the wonders of google search and wikipedia I’ve found out that the original owners were inspired by a song lyric from the Talking Heads album, “Little Creatures” and refer to the live yeast cells that turn the sugars in malt wort into ethanol!

Situated in Mews Road between the Esplanade and Fremantle Boat Harbour, there is a distinct industrial feel with a maritime twist about the building. In fact it was one of the buildings that was used to house yachts competing in the 1987 Americas Cup (held in WA), then became a crocodile farm for a while (which we visited way back in 1990 when we first came to Perth). Now it comprises not only a working brewery but has a cafe and restaurant attached.

I am not a beer connoisseur so I can’t say too much on that front but the flagship beer is the original Little Creatures Pale Ale launched in 1990. All the guests we’ve taken there along with Monsieur Le Chic can vouch for the range and quality of the beers on offer! The back garden overlooks the boat harbour and is extremely popular – it also has a sandpit and play area for children. However since it was winter on our last visit and distinctly chilly we opted to sit indoors. The place was packed and the wait staff literally run off their feet so initially we took our drinks and went to sit in the upstairs area. However owing to the lunchtime rush (it was the July school holidays here) we couldn’t get table service upstairs so we had to wait for a free table in the downstairs area, which fortunately didn’t take too long. We were quite hungry by this point and ready to tuck into a feast! Their tasting plates are great to share and we got a selection of dishes to dip into including their tasty pizzas. The local Fremantle sardines were my favourite and you can get wine there too for the non-beer drinkers like me.

The chalkboard menus give you an idea of what’s on offer around lunchtime. They are open daily until late, which must mean the small hours as on Sundays they are only open  until 11 pm!

The adjoining Brewhouse Bar is open for beer tastings and they also run brewery tours at 1 pm, 2 pm and 3 pm each day, You only need to book if you are in a group party of 10 or more – otherwise you just front up at the bar at the correct time!

Fremantle has an artistic vibe and Little Creatures reflects this with a selection of artwork on display, which is available for purchase. It was on the modern and avant garde side and not to my personal taste, but it fitted in very well with the style of the building.

There were a few delightfully kitsch touches including the iconic “kombi” van near the front entrance and the ATM machine disguised as an old fashioned red fridge!

In only 15 years, Little Creatures has become a local icon on the front at Fremantle. Don’t be put off by the crowds – they always seem to manage to seat you somehow and it is well worth a visit if you are ever down Freo way!

Hmm, I am liking your corner of the world more and more! We have 3 breweries in Glasgow and I’m thinking I might make that a winter project this year 🙂

    1. Thanks Anabel we do live in a lovely part of the world and it’s good to be able to highlight some of the attractions here! Visiting the Glasgow breweries would be a good idea in winter I would think! 🙂

Nice. I must ask my son if he has been there, I am sure he will have as he likes his ‘real ale’ and even brews his own when he has time! I didn’t know Aussies called the VW a ‘kombi’ I always thought that was a South African word.

    1. I think your son may well have been there Jude especially if he likes his “real ale”! I always thought “Kombi” was an Aussie term for the VW camper van so yes the term is still very much in use here! You still see them parked in the car parks and lay-bys down by the beaches – popular with surfers and people travelling round the country!

Maybe it shifted across with the surfing community.

        1. Yes that’s a good point Jude – certainly the Kombi is mainly associated with surfers even to this day.

    1. They do some great vegetarian dishes Jo – our elder daughter is vegetarian so I always check places out for that and Iove those dishes myself though I do eat chicken and fish 😀

  6. I can definitely recommend the tour next time you have visitors, the tasting at the end in particular was great, letting you sample all the different beers and work out what you like. Plus the tour guides are really knowledgeable about the brewing process and the history of Little Creatures.

    1. Thanks for the info that’s really good to know – the tour sounds like it’s well worth doing! Even a non beer drinker such as me would be interested in the history and how Little Creatures was set up!

  7. When I was living in Oz, quite a few people told me to visit Fremantle, but I never got there. I wish I had now – Little Creatures looks like a wonderful place to visit. I’m not a big beer drinker (although hubby would be in his element). I think I would just enjoy all that wonderful food. Hope you had a great weekend and the weather has improved. Judging by your photos it looks like it’s warming up!

    1. The food at Little Creatures is lovely Ting and the setting right by the boat harbour is wonderful too. I’m not a beer drinker but I just get a nice glass of wine instead 🙂 Fremantle is very interesting from a historical perspective and has the feel of a port city (well size-wise it’s really more like a small town!). The markets are well worth browsing round and there are some quirky and quaint shops around plus art galleries and museums – am sure you’d love it if you ever come back “down under” again try and visit! The photos, believe it or not, were taken last month and it was a cool and chilly day (well we think mid teens maximum is chilly here plus there was a strong breeze!). We have been getting a lot of late winter rain and have had some cold wet days recently but in between it’s starting to feel a bit like spring is on the way and it was around 20 degrees maximum today (drops down a lot at night though so we still have the fire and heaters on!). Hope you enjoyed a lovely break in the Cotswolds 🙂

Fremantle is such an attractive place to visit too – one of my favourite spots. Hope you have a lovely weekend and I’ll just head out to your blog for a catch up (it’s been a busy week and I haven’t caught up with blog reading for a little while)! 🙂

    1. Yes it’s a good place to spend some time even if you’re not a beer drinker (like me). They have some great food on the menu and the ambiance is lovely there plus you can get plenty of other drinks including soft ones 🙂 We actually went there when it was a crocodile farm years ago!

    1. The menu is certainly varied Lisa – the best thing to do we have found, is order a few dishes to share “tapas” style 🙂 It’s right down by the harbour too so if you ever come to Fremantle you’d know where to find it! There are so many great cafes and restaurants down by the harbour here – fish and chips is a great favourite too! 🙂

    1. Thanks Gin! Yes Little creatures is one of our “go to” places especially if we have visitors. I thought the artwork was a great touch 🙂 The food is delicious and of course being right by the sea, seafood features heavily on the menu. We love to get several dishes to share and it’s also great for vegetarians too (like our elder daughter). All in all a great place to eat out by the harbour 🙂

h, Little Creatures. I remeber it well from when I visited “Freo” about 10 years ago to attend a conference. Your pictures bring back some memories. They used to sell the beer in Sainsbury’s for a whilem which I discovered a little while after I got back.

    1. I’m glad the photos brought back some happy memories for you and thanks very much for following my blog! Likewise I’ve popped over to visit you and follow your blog too 🙂 My dad always shops at Sainsbury’s so I go there with him when I’m over – they have an impressive liquor section there!
