Le Chic En Rose

Diaries of an independent traveller

The other weekend we went along to a Family Fun Day organised by the local Perth community radio station, RTRfm. Our daughter, Mlle, is now working for them as a development and marketing manager so we were supporting her and taking the opportunity for a day out with the family.

The event was held in Hyde Park (not the London one!). Situated only a couple of kilometres north east of the inner city area, it is a tranquil spot, which seems far removed from the bustle of the city centre so close by.

With canopies of trees, ducks swimming along the lake and the green space surrounded by Edwardian-style terraced homes and cottages it was the perfect venue. Our granddaughters had a ball with the organised activities and the grown-ups could relax on the grass and sample some of the food and beverages whilst listening to live music.

Having not not been to Hyde Park before, despite calling Perth home for over 30 years (apart from a 7 years hiatus in Melbourne), I duly did some research about its origins. The environment was a swampy area that comprised a series of wetlands stretching north of the river. The local Noongar people called this area ” Boodjamooling” but after the establishment of the Swan River Colony in 1829, the recently-arrived settlers gave it the unfortunate name of Third Swamp. When it was made a public park in 1897, it received the new name of Hyde Park. The other wetlands stretched from what is now Claisebrook Cove near East Perth up to Herdsman Lake and Lake Monger further north. Only a small portion of the original wetlands remains. However walking along beside the lake in Hyde Park watching the ducks wandering happily in the reeds and grasslands by the water, you get a feel for the original wetland area.

I think people often think of Perth as being in the middle of the desert and indeed we are separated from the eastern states by the endless dry flat plain of the Nullarbor Desert. The Nullarbor (Latin for ‘no trees’) is a limestone plain, which is over 1000 kms long and spans Western Australia and South Australia. The Western Australian section starts in Norseman, which is a two hour drive south of Kalgoorlie in the Eastern Goldfields. It takes nearly 8 hours to drive from Norseman up to Perth (it’s over 700 kms away) so we are in fact quite a distance from the actual desert! If you ever feel like making the long drive (which for many is a rite of passage) you can find more information here. Our elder daughter crossed the Nullarbor with friends over 10 years ago when they drove from Perth to Melbourne and back. I didn’t sleep much for the 10 days or so they were away!

The photos of Hyde Park below give a glimpse into another aspect of Perth life – we do have a considerable amount of of green space and vegetation, which provides some welcome respite from the summer sun along of course with our pristine beaches!

Rosemay, the park looks very picturesque. I am sure it must have been fun for the grand-daughters, particularly with great organized activities. Sounds like a very interesting job for your daughter. Are there any Kangaroos skipping around there? We have cousins in Perth (on my husband’s side of the family), it is a place I would love to visit again.

    1. Thanks Gilda – yes it was a lovely day and Mlle is so lucky to have got this job after coming back from London a year ago. There aren’t any kangaroos in this park (as far as I’m aware!) as it is too close to the city and doesn’t back on to bushland. There are some at the local golf course near us though, which is really quite far into the Metro area – you can see them sitting in the shade sometimes when you’re driving past they seem quite unfazed by things! I do hope you can come to Perth some day!

“…a day out with the family”
We can still only dream of doing this! I am sorry to have missed out on exploring Perth, it looks like a great place to live.

    1. I know I do realise how lucky we have been Jude and it can be hard knowing whether to post activities we have been up to recently. I don’t want to appear insensitive to those currently experiencing extended lockdowns. Perth is certainly a lovely place to live. I hope all is well with you in spite of things and with spring on the way that things will start to improve 🙂

I think you should post what you want and even if we can’t go out and about it is nice to read about places that other people can get to. Virtual travel is what keeps us going! Only a week before we can hopefully wander a little further and then on 12 April things start to ease a bit. What I am looking forward to most is a haircut! 😂

        1. Thanks Jude – nice to know it helps a bit to keep posting about what we are doing as I know it must be so hard for you all at present. I would find not going to the hairdressers very hard too – my poor Dad has long curls now but as I pointed out to him he’s lucky to have a full head of hair at nearly 88!

I’m seriously tempted to take the scissors to it myself as goodness knows when I’ll get a hair appointment. They don’t even open until April 12. People will be desperate!

            3. Yes unfortunately it might take a while to get in. If it’s getting in your face perhaps you could attempt a trim? Our elder granddaughter (then aged 7) decided to cut her long hair a few months ago! She found a You Tube tutorial and gave herself a bob – it was actually very trendy but somewhat of a shock when her mother saw her! She’s very fashion conscious and wants to be a fashion designer when she grows up! I should add that hairdressers are open here so she could just have asked her mum to organise an appointment ….Now she’s growing it back out again 🙂

I had a Saturday haircut! Mick had his done on Friday but my Mam always said cutting hair on Fridays was unlucky. Silly, isn’t it, but I do still tend to observe that. Just in case 🙂 🙂

          1. I’d no idea about that superstition Jo – I had my last hair appointment on a Friday! All seems to be well! Glad you have both managed to have a haircut 🙂 🙂

    1. Thanks Mel – there is so much to see and do in Perth and also if you get out of the Metro area. I originally started this blog as a travel one and have nearly run out of older overseas trips to write up but have always mixed it up with posts about Perth (you should be able to access them from the menu under Western Australia). Hope you have a great trip! 🙂

        1. Hopefully it gives you some ideas! There is so much to see and do here. I’ve yet to visit the newly opened WA Museum in the city – apparently it’s really good though believe you need to book (check anyway if planning to go there) 🙂
