Diaries of an independent traveller

Well what surreal and unsettling times we find ourselves in! It’s only a couple of weeks since I posted my last blog about our trip to London in May last year (see here) and so much has happened in that short time.

It was not a great surprise when Australia’s borders were abruptly closed this week – we are attempting to “flatten the curve” by employing social distancing measures early on in the epidemic although we are moving inevitably towards stricter quarantines and lockdowns especially in the eastern states, which currently are more affected than Western Australia. For now schools here stay open but…..

It was a shock however when Qantas, the national airline, announced the cessation of all international flights from the end of the month (31st March) until at least 31st May but the flight hiatus will almost certainly be much longer than that. In practice this means the end of flights next week on the prime London to Perth non stop route. Citizens and permanent residents can come back into the country assuming they can get a flight, which in reality will soon be impossible. There is a 14 day mandatory self isolation on return for all arrivals with heavy fines for non-compliers, $50,000 here in WA. The government has urged Australians travelling or living overseas to get back Down Under as soon as they can.  Those of us with overseas families feel this indefinite travel ban acutely but it is far safer to stay at home and there are many people in worse situations at present.

However despite this being primarily a travel blog I do want to keep posting and reading other blogs – it is a connection to blogging friends round the world at a time when we are, in all likelihood, going to be self isolating in our own homes for quite a while.

It does seem a bit insensitive to carry on posting about past trips at present though I guess vicarious travel will be the order of the day for some time to come. I may well resume my Alaska series (and our trip to Seattle) at some future point. We took a cruise up from Vancouver for a week and one wonders if that section of the travel industry will ever properly recover.

For now I will focus on posting some photos taken in Perth – we are still out and about to some extent but far more limited than usual. My daily walks mean even more than normal and help to calm anxiety in worrying times. The following photos were taken on my regular walk around our suburb. I’ve featured the Trigonometric look-out point before (see here). Spot the kookaburra – he stayed on his perch for quite some time making the distinctive loud “laughing” call as he finally flew off.

Earlier in the year before the school term started, we visited Kings Park with our elder daughter and granddaughters – always a perennial favourite. Here are some photos from that outing. It may be a while before we go back there again (see here for a previous visit).

Winston Le Schnoodle does not yet understand the concept of social distancing but he is happy as long as he gets his walks. Monsieur took this photo of the sunrise over the Perth Hills last week.

In the meantime stay safe and sound everybody. À bientôt.

Oh yes, do keep posting about your travels. Virtual journeys are better than none, and a great way for bloggers to stay connected at a time when all connections are more important than ever. Great photos with sunny skies centre stage!

    1. Thanks Margaret! It occurred to me that many of the small business operators we met along the way in our Alaska travels in particular will lose their jobs now that the cruise ships are no longer sailing. I’d like to do my bit to highlight their work and hopefully when this current chaos settles down people will go back there again. I’ll start writing up the travel posts again – I certainly won’t have any new travel material for a while! Yes enjoying my walks and the sunny skies and natural bushland are uplifting! Hope we can carry on getting out into nature for as long as possible 😃

I hope so too. And small businesses at the moment .. truly hard times. It’s hard to know how this will end well.

        1. Yes I can’t think what going to happen either – so many people are going through such incredibly tough times. Let’s hope a resolution will be found before too long although the impact will surely be felt for years to come.

  2. It’s good to still be able to get out in the fresh air (and, thankfully, it has stopped raining here). I think beyond our immediate surroundings we are all armchair travellers now, so I intend to keep posting. I might even catch up!

    1. Yes agree with you Anabel – I might finally catch up with previous trips! Certainly won’t have any new material for a while. I hope we can continue getting out in the fresh air – that is so important for fitness and sanity! Although we have “only” 120 cases here in Western Australia (so far mainly returning travellers) we are closing down. Already sporting and cultural events all cancelled and from tomorrow all pubs and clubs will close and cafes and restaurants can only trade for takeaways or delivery. Australian borders already closed to non citizens and non residents and the Western Australian state borders are shutting from this Tuesday. It is increasingly surreal. I’ll keep blogging as it is a great way to stay connected and hopefully keep everyone’s spirits up. Take care 🙂

      1. You too! A lot shut down here as well, but real problems with people converging on places like Snowdonia to get their fresh air and making it busier than a Bank Holiday Monday!

        1. It’s so hard – I can see why people want to get out and about as fresh air and exercise are so important but it causes further problems. We are fortunate to have a garden but it’s not the same as getting out for a nice long walk – as long as I can still do my daily walks I’ll be happy will find it really hard if I can’t!

          1. Me too! We have the canal and river to walk along locally, so hope we can keep doing that.

Carry on posting blue skies Rosemary – they certainly lift the spirits. And no bad thing to photograph your local environment. I have been doing that for several years now as we haven’t managed to do much travelling for one reason or another, and it seems this year will be the same. Oh, well. Let’s hope we get through this crisis, though the virus will probably be with us for years to come.

    1. Anything to lift the spirits Jude – it is such a stressful and surreal time. I shall continue posting both writing up some past travels for future inspiration and also posting about our local environment as that is where we’ll be staying for some time. I love all your photos – there are many interesting things close to home and appreciating the little things will be the order of the day. I hope the crisis does not last too long though we have been told to expect 6 months or so of disruptions and limitations on normal life here. Sars version 1 is still around as far as I know so maybe this epidemic will die down even if Sars Coronavirus 2 is still out there. Stay safe and take care 🙂

The recent events are bewildering and scary, at times it all feels like it is just a movie…not reality. Absolutely keep blogging, virtual traveling is all we have at the moment. I love your photos of Kings Park, a trip down memory lane. Stay safe and well.

    1. Thanks Gilda 😃 Yes it is an unsettling and scary time. It does feel like we’re all in some strange futuristic movie! Not sure where you are now as last time I checked you were in SE Asia? I’ll head to your blog to catch up! Thanks I’ll carry on doing the blog – virtual travelling can give us some inspiration for the future and also it’s a lovely way to connect in these strange times. Kings Park is beautiful and will appreciate it even more when we can go and visit it again. Take care and stay safe xx
