Le Chic En Rose

Diaries of an independent traveller

Temple Newsam House and Gardens was a favourite weekend outing destination when I was growing up in Leeds. Recently I had a pleasant stroll round the grounds again whilst spending time with my Yorkshire family. It must have been 25 years plus since I was last there!

It was the end of April and between floral seasons so the daffodils were waning and the rhododendrons and azaleas only just starting to bloom. Yet although the colours were more muted it was still a charming and tranquil place for a mid afternoon stroll.

We wandered past the goats grazing on the grass at Home Farm, which looked a fun place for children and young families. However we didn’t have time to go up to the main house or stop off at the cafe.

There is also a “Go Ape” climbing activity course for anyone who is interested. I preferred to stay on the ground though!

You can find other posts about my Yorkshire and UK travels both recent and historical here. I have one more Yorkshire post from my recent trip to share then we’ll be off to Germany and the Rhine before coming back to East London.

How funny! One of these days our paths will cross, Rosemay- far apart though we are! Last Saturday we were at a Family Fun Day at Temple Newsam, and of course, we had fun 🙂 🙂 The youngsters are booking Go Ape. Not my cup of tea either!

    1. That is such a coincidence Jo! Yes am sure our paths will cross sooner or later – maybe even in Portugal if not Leeds as Mlle is keen to go there with us and shown us around 🙂 She has been several times for holidays and loves it! Her work is in London though! The Family Fun Day does sound fun – I saw that Temple Newsam puts on quite a few events throughout the year. The gardens would be a lovely setting for weddings and other functions too 🙂

A trip down memory lane for you…25 years ago. I was already living in Dorset then. Lovely gardens, sounds like you had a lovely time.

    1. It’s funny how I’ve not been back there since then Gilda even though I’ve been to Leeds many times! Dorset would be a lovely place to live 🙂

  3. We used to go there too when visiting my sister and her partner who lived in Leeds at the same time as we lived in South Yorkshire. So i’m talking even longer ago than your 25 years, more like 30. Nice to see it’s still going strong!

    1. I think it may well be more like 30 years for me too Anabel I just can’t remember! I left Leeds in 1981 to go down to uni in London but may have been to Temple Newsam since then on visits back home. The gardens were very pretty and I remember we used to like going when the azaleas and rhododendrons were in full bloom 🙂
