Diaries of an independent traveller

Back from our recent trip to the Uk and Germany and trying to get myself organised before we begin major kitchen and laundry renovations in a couple of weeks time! I thought I would write up my posts on our latest trip now whilst it’s still fresh in my mind and then go back to complete the lengthy series on Canada and Alaska (see here and here for those posts so far).

I spent about 10 days up in Yorkshire visiting my family. Of course I have blogged about this lovely area before but even so one always seems to find new things to do and places to visit. York is a perennial favourite of mine and I spent an enjoyable day out there with my brother. Despite its myriad attractions (see here and here for previous posts), I have never walked all the way round the old city walls before. I’ve taken the iconic photos of the Minster from Lendal Bridge and occasionally walked along a short stretch of the walls near the Castle Museum but this was my first complete circuit.

We strolled along at a leisurely pace stopping regularly to take photos and it took us about an hour and an quarter but according to the tourist information you should allow 2 hours (see here for more information). I’m quite sure we didn’t miss out any sections and we didn’t walk particularly fast so perhaps that is a conservative estimate. There are 5 main bars or gateways and you can access the walls at any of these main points. The history is well explained as you go round – the history of York is colourful, sometimes tragic but always fascinating and you get a feel for how the city has evolved over the centuries, a melting pot of different peoples, cultures and religions. Romans, Vikings, travellers from the Middle East, Jewish people, and opposing armies in the English Civil War have all walked here before.

The City Walls originated in Roman times but their course has changed considerably since then and they curve round what would probably have been the old medieval city. They are remarkably well preserved though there are sections where you just have to walk along a modern street for a little while before climbing the steps and rejoining the path along the walls. Dogs are not allowed unless they are guide dogs and you do have to exercise some caution as one side often didn’t have railings. Although they drop off to a grassy embankment I wouldn’t fancy falling off so do take care when passing people especially with elderly people and children. The steps to get on and off the different sections are also rather steep so might not be suitable for everyone. We arrived back near to our starting point at Lendal Bridge ready for a hearty lunch!

I was also very sad to read about the light plane crash in the Ketchikan neighbourhood the other week (see here). I had written about Ketchikan just before we went on holiday last month (see here). It’s a beautiful small fishing port, which relies heavily on the tourist industry for business – thoughts are with those affected by this tragic accident.

  1. Lovely set of images.
Yes, the story out of Ketchikan is tragic and there was another crash not long after the first one so the company has stopped flying until they figure out a safer way to do these tourist flights… (Suzanne)

    1. Thanks Suzanne – I have been away for a while and couldn’t get my iPad to work properly whilst overseas hence my absence! Back into writing up my travels now and catching up on other blogs! Yes we didn’t do any of the tourist flights when we were in Alaska – we both felt a bit apprehensive about them so gave it a miss. I hope they find out the causes of these crashes and don’t resume flights until they have figured out the safety side very sad 😦

    1. York has always been a firm favourite of mine Anabel ever since I was little. Haven’t made it there for a couple of years now so was so glad to get a day trip in this time. The City Walls are a wonderful walk – so many fantastic vantage points! 🙂

I probably walked the walls around the city many times as a child with my brothers as my dad used to like going to the York races and we children would go to the fair and on the city walls! It is a great city. Fabulous history and some very nice pubs and restaurants 🙂

    1. Yes the history of York is fabulous Jude and there are some wonderful pubs and restaurants especially down by the river. Can’t believe I’ve never walked round the whole of the walls before and I’ve been to York countless times! 🙂

Absolutely loved York. I managed a short section of the wall. It would be great to do the whole thing.

    1. It’s taken me many visits to finally do the whole wall walk! Well worth it – you get a different perspective of the city and it helps to put it all into context. Hope you get back to York one day it’s a lovely and fascinating city! 🙂

SO grey! I don’t think you were lucky with the weather but I know the visit was all about family. Still, thanks for reminding me of what I’m missing 🙂 🙂 I’m writing a ‘6 months on’ and was reading through the lovely comments on the 3 months post, and that’s what brought me here. Thank you for your warmth and understanding. Meantime, I’ve walked those walls and know it’s a lovely city, and blue skies have arrived since your departure. Hope all goes well at home.

    1. Oh that’s lovely Jo – thanks for your kind words and hope you’re feeling a bit more settled now. Yes it was certainly grey and rather chilly! However it did warm up later in the day and we were basking in the spring sun in the Abbey Gardens by the afternoon (I shall blog about that soon). On the whole the weather was rather cool and grey for virtually our whole trip (3 weeks) though the last weekend in London was lovely. I have been absent partly due to being busy with travels and also computer problems whilst on the road. My iPad is evidently struggling to keep up and probably needs to be updated but I’m trying to put that off for a while! I can’t believe I’ve never walked all the way round those city walls before now! It was a beautiful walk with many photographic opportunities. The weather did warm up a bit by our last weekend in the Uk when we were back in London visiting Mlle and my extended family down that way. I’ll be catching up on your walks and updates very soon, in the meantime hope you’re having a lovely weekend 🙂 🙂

Technology! When I give up blogging that will likely be the reason. Both my laptop and phone need updating 😕

        1. Yep I’m in the same boat Jo – the technology has its challenges for me and I don’t like being tied to computers and mobiles all the time but I do enjoy the blogging and the “blogosphere” community. I need to update my iPad especially as it takes ages to load stuff up and sometimes refuses to work at all. I’ll probably do both the phone and iPad once I’ve got the renos out of the way – you have to transfer all the data across first and it sounds tricky to me!!

Rosemay, I did not realised your family is actually from Yorkshire. Such a beautiful region, Brian and I loved York when we visited last year. Walking on the walls is great, it is amazing how well preserved they are. I hope your home renovations will go smoothly.

    1. Thanks Gilda yes I grew up in Yorkshire, moved down to London for uni when I was 18! My dad, brother, sister and aunt all still live there, which is why you’ll see me visiting regularly usually about once a year. York is an absolute favourite place of mine to visit, though as you can see have only managed to do the full walk round the walls recently! I need a new iPad which I’ll have to organise once the renovations have progressed a bit – it’s so slow now it made it hard to use WordPress whilst travelling hence I had to wait till back at home on my desktop to catch up on the blog. Will come by and check out all your travels soon too 🙂
