Le Chic En Rose

Diaries of an independent traveller

Finally arrived in London after a slightly fraught journey with delayed travel plans resulting from the unseasonal spring freeze, which has caused havoc across the U.K. Haven’t landed on a snow-covered runway at Heathrow before!

We have had a whirlwind weekend catching up with our younger daughter, Mlle, in London. Seeing the canal at Little Venice frozen over was an amazing sight and even the Regents Park lake was still frozen over when we walked round there yesterday.

The best thing to do – head off in search of warmth, food and drink! I have a lot of posts to write up in due course but here is a glimpse of a little discovery at Temple opposite the Royal Courts of Justice. The Temple Brew House is housed in a basement in Essex Street very close to St Clement Danes Church. Unpretentious and welcoming it was just what we needed on a bitterly cold “spring” day – huge homemade chicken and mustard pies, craft beer for Mlle and Monsieur and white wine for me went down a treat!

More about our London travels to follow – a bientot!

Awesome Rosemary. I was at Little Venice and Regents Park last year – didn’t see it like that 😀

    1. It was an incredible sight Ken most unusual for the time of year! It’s a lovely part of London – we couldn’t go for a canal boat ride though!

More ice but a lot less snow than we have here. Thankfully, it seems to be thawing this morning.

    1. Glad to hear that Anabel – I know it looks pretty but it’s not fun to try and get around in. Saw that Glasgow airport was shut for some time too. It has almost thawed completely down here now and this morning the sun is actually shining! Cool from our point of view though milder than the sub zero temperatures when we first arrived was chilled right through!

I more or less hibernated for a couple of days – easy for me, but not so good when you are on holiday and want to go out enjoying yourselves!

        1. Very sensible if you’re able to just stay indoors. One thing we really noticed was how slippery it was on the pavements I nearly went flying on a few occasions – was lucky to keep my footing. Am going to look out for a heavy duty pair of boots with a good grip just in case need to come over again in winter – my Australian boots are not quite “heavy duty” enough!

            1. We do wear boots in winter more for fashion reasons though it gets cold and rainy (no snow though in Perth!).

  3. The weather here has been a bit of a shock that’s for sure but looks like it is back to normal now!

    1. Couldn’t believe how cold it was for the first couple of days – even with several layers of clothing I felt chilled to the bone. Definitely milder here in London but coming up to Yorkshire mid week and it still looks very cold especially at night!

      1. It was the wind that made the difference, now it has gone it is so much milder, even up here in the north!

Crikey it must have been bitter in London for the water to freeze like that! Hopefully you will get to see some better spring-like weather whilst you are here.

    1. We were amazed can’t remember frozen lakes in London certainly not for a long time! Hopefully we will have a taste of spring at some point. Now in Somerset where it’s raining constantly!

Something I’ve never seen, Rosemay! 😦 😦 I don’t think it’s possible to wear enough clothes, though I gather it’s getting warmer. Enjoy the rest of your trip! 🙂

    1. I can’t remember seeing this before either Jo and we did live in London for 9 years back in the 80s and early 90s!! I couldn’t get any more layers of clothing on and I still felt cold! It was milder by yesterday a balmy 8 or 9 though we came down to the West Country to visit my mother in law and it’s cold and rainy here. Still we didn’t come for the weather! Thanks and enjoy rest of your Portuguese sojourn 😃

My son lives in London and I visit him regularly, always so much to do there. I hope you have a lovely time with your daughter and hopefully the weather is warming up now 🙂

    1. Thanks Gilda we heard everyone referring to it as “The Beast From The East” and certainly it seemed the winds were coming from Siberia! We had a lovely time in London and are back there at the end of next week. Now in the West Country it’s a bit milder which is nice 😃

I don’t think I could survive in that cold weather, but that pie would help warm the cockles…

    1. It’s been very cold Pauline though a bit milder today. I couldn’t live here anymore – the wind gets into your bones at times but the pubs are warm and welcoming 😃
