Just a quick post today to start up the blog again after my unscheduled trip to the UK following my mum’s passing. It was, of course, mainly taken up with family stuff and appointments but I did manage a lovely walk one afternoon in the Royal Horticultural Society’s Harlow Carr Gardens in Harrogate with my dad.
It was the first time I’ve been back to the UK during autumn since moving out to Perth 27 years ago. Have come over in every season on many occasions but for some reason not autumn, which would have to be one of my favourite times of the year! The beautiful russet and gold colours were a joy to see at a very stressful and emotional time and the autumnal walks invigorating.
For more information about Harlow Carr and to see the contrast with spring, see here for a previous visit last May.
Looking forward to catching up on everyone’s else’s news and some long overdue blog reading!

Thanks Anabel – it went as well as these things can. A very difficult time and almost doesn’t feel real. It’s been warm back in Perth – the sunshine was good to come back to!

Thanks it’s been a tough few weeks. Now back in Perth getting on with things – autumn seems a far way off as we’re in the midst of a spring heatwave here though cooler today 🙂

At least you found SOME autumn colour, it has been sadly lacking this year. Hope everything went well under the circumstances and I do hope your dad manages alright on his own. Hopefully you have family members still in the UK to support him. My poor dad went to pieces after my mum died. He just couldn’t cope living on his own. Take care.

Yes Jude managed to find some lovely autumn colours in Harlow Carr! Things went as well as they could under the circumstances. My dad has people around to support him especially my brother. As my mum had been living in a care/nursing home for many years he has been able to establish his own life but of course it is going to be a big adjustment for him. Thanks for your support, hope all is well with you and your family xx

All’s well here Rosemary. My son returned to his home a month ago and is doing well. Glad to hear your dad has people around him and good to know he can manage well on his own.

Oh, that’s sad news about your mother! I’m so sorry for your loss. I am glad you were able to go “home” to England and to be there at such a glorious season, though–I hope the walks soothed you.

Thanks Ruth – these gardens are lovely and was nice to see them in a different season than usual (we tend to be over there in the spring).

We haven’t been for a couple of years, Rosemay. We made the Harrogate Flower Show this year but the grounds of Harlow Carr must be beautiful in Autumn colour. Still hanging on to traces of it here, but it’s wet this morning. 😦 Glad you’re home and ‘back to normal’. Love to your Dad 🙂

Thanks so much Jo for your lovely thoughts 🙂 Feeling more myself and getting back into the swing of things not to mention the pre Christmas stuff. Harlow Carr was glorious with the autumnal colours – can’t believe hadn’t been over to the UK in autumn time for 27 years!! Hope the weather brightens up for you soon – must be a bit of a contrast to the Algarve so hope the rain doesn’t linger too long 🙂
