Le Chic En Rose

Diaries of an independent traveller

I wrote this post “Easter Memories – Yorkshire Dales” earlier this year and am republishing it today in memory of my beautiful mum who sadly passed away on Wednesday evening. We are all very sad to lose her but she has had little quality of life for many years and had grown increasingly frail, so it is a relief that she is now finally at peace.

I’m soon going to be making the long journey back to the UK for her funeral and to spend some time with my family over there. Will be taking a little break from the blog until I’m back in Perth again and things are more settled. I do, however, hope to catch up on some blog reading from time to time. Thanks for your understanding.

Mum lived most of her long life in Yorkshire (except for a couple of years in the WRNS in London in the 2nd World War). She loved the dales, the moors and fell walking when she was younger. This post is dedicated to her. Rest in peace Mum xxx

I am so sorry to hear your sad news. I lost my mother in 2001, she was only 65, I still miss her a lot. I hope you will find comforting spending sometime with the family in the UK. This post is a lovely tribute to her.

    1. Thanks Gilda and am so sorry to hear you lost Mum at a relatively young age it must have been a very hard time. Very sad to lose Mum but she had had no quality of life for many years and it was very hard seeing her suffer with the dementia. She loved the dales and I will always think of her when I see these photos.

    1. Thanks so much Jo – it has been very hard being so far away but I am so fortunate to have a lovely family here too and supportive friends. Going to be a tough few weeks but sharing memories of Mum with my Uk family will be comfort and there is relief mixed with the sadness that she is finally at peace, which helps xx

    1. Thanks Andrew – Mum certainly loved Yorkshire and trips up the Yorkshire Dales, to the coast at Filey, Bridlington, Scarborough and Whitby plus the Yorkshire Moors were part of my childhood and something I will always associate with Mum.

    1. Thanks so much Joy – my mum loved this part of the world and I have many childhood memories of visiting the area. Not sure if I’ll have too much time on the next visit back but hope to go there some day again. Will always associate Mum with the Dales and Yorkshire.

    1. Thank you very much. It has been hard to see my mum suffer with dementia – she had been wanting to go for a while and was over 90 too. Though very sad we’re thankful she’s finally at peace. Best wishes to you and your mother.

So sorry to hear about your mum: even when we know life is not so good any more for our parents it is still a shock when they die. Sadness tinged with relief. A beautiful post to remember her by. Safe travels Rosemary and all my best wishes to you and your family at this time.

    1. Thanks so much Jude – yeas that is exactly how I feel sadness tinged with relief. It was painful to watch Mum suffering with the dementia and reduced quality of life. It was a shock even though I knew she’d been failing for a long time somehow expected her to go and on as she always had….I will always associate Mum with the Yorkshire Dales which she loved xx

My mother was quite ill for some years and when she died my dad fell to pieces and suffered from dementia too and had to go into a home. It was awful seeing him like that as he had no idea who I was most of the time. When he died I was sad, relieved and felt a little bit guilty too, as though I had let him down. He was such a generous and happy man with a big heart.

        1. So sorry to hear that Jude – must have been such a hard time for you all. Dementia is a horrible disease – you feel so helpless watching on but in reality there is nothing more you could have done. It’s hard thinking how alone Mum must have felt as she couldn’t remember 5 minutes later who had visited her. I hope that remembering your dad as he truly was – a generous happy man will give you some comfort.

  15. The scenery in Yorkshire seems awe-inspiring and magical. When’s the best time of the year to explore it?

    1. I always love the spring and autumn times. In the spring there is a profusion of daffodils everywhere and other beautiful flowers and in the autumn I love the reds and golds of the leaves. It is a very beautiful part of the world – the scenery is stunning! 😃
