Le Chic En Rose

Diaries of an independent traveller

The promenade along Lake Geneva (Lac Leman) stretched for miles in both directions. We had only to go down the steps from our hotel (the Eurotel) to find ourselves on the lakeside path. The views are priceless – the lake looked like a glass mirror and always seemed tranquil even on rainy days.

Montreux is surrounded by the Alps. They rise up on the southern shore of the lake in the direction of the Mont Blanc Massif, the eastern edge of the lake leads up the Rhone Valley and the northern fringes take you up towards Rochers de Naye and the ski slopes of Gstaad. Best of all, walking is free – a very enjoyable activity in a country that tends to be expensive!

We set off to visit the Chateau de Chillon on our last full day in Montreux. Although there are regular buses to and from the town, we decided to walk the 3 kilometres or so along the lake. It took us about half an hour at a leisurely pace, stopping frequently for photos!

The old castle came into view just as the first spots of rain started to fall. Very atmospheric!

Next week – our tour round the old chateau made famous by Lord Byron’s poem, “The Prisoner of Chillon”.

What a beautiful location! I am glad you decided to walk to the Chateau….very good decision. With stunning views like that I am sure you had to stop every five minutes to take a photo. Gorgeous place😄

    1. Yes the walk was wonderful Gilda – breathtaking views and so serene down by the lake. We got a bit wet by the end as it started to rain but we didn’t mind – it was rather refreshing. Yes we were stopping a lot to take photos! The walk and the views are priceless! 🙂

We took a boat up to the castle from Vevey and walked back along the promenade. It is a lovely castle and a lovely walk. Unfortunately fog obscured the opposite side of the lake until our last day so we barely saw the amazing mountain views.

    1. That would have been a lovely trip Jude – sorry about the views though 😦 We were lucky as although we did have rain, including a big storm one night, we did get to see the mountains. We wanted to do a boat trip but didn’t have time and Vevey is also on the wish list for next time!

    1. Apologies for late reply Jo! Rather a hectic few days but catching up now. Yes stunning scenery in this part of the world and the mountain air is so refreshing too. Have so many photos – condensing them is quite an effort! Hope all is well with you and you’re having a lovely weekend 🙂

An exhausting one because James was moving house and we spent all day yesterday ferrying stuff, building flatpacks and cleaning, but they have a lovely new place. He and his lady look so happy. 🙂 🙂 Semi-lazy day today. Not even sure where to take my walkers tomorrow.

        1. Sounds a very busy day Jo! Glad you son is happily settled! Hope you had a good rest yesterday and will join you for a walk later today. Just taking the dog off for his regular doggy grooming session – he always looks so smart afterwards! 🙂
