A couple of weekends of Grandmum Le Chic duties hasn’t left much time for blogging! However although I could go on for ever (given the amount of photos we managed to take!) it’s time to say farewell to Lake Como for the time being. I’m just going to finish off the series with a montage of some photos of our daily morning walk along the lake at Menaggio. Not a bad way to start the day even if we did have a few cloudy mornings!

Coming up I’ll be covering our trip to Berlin interspersed with some Western Australian posts I’ve been meaning to write up for a while.

Thanks Suzanne! Yes Berlin is certainly a vibrant and fascinating place. We’ve been there a couple of times and still have so much to explore. The history is of course mind blowing and the regeneration is incredible 🙂

The perfect morning walk Rosemary!! Really enjoyed your posts on Como and very much looking forward to reading about Berlin – somewhere very near the top of our travel list. Hope you’ve recovered from racing around after the little ones and you have a much deserved relaxing weekend!

Thanks Joy – yes could get used to that walk each day it was such a peaceful and relaxed spot!! Glad you’ve enjoyed the Como posts – we have been to Maggiore as well but I did find something about the more rugged scenery round Como that really drew me in. Have been meaning to write more about Berlin for some time – we’ve been twice in 2013 and again this April and I’ve so much to share! I have just about recovered from last weekend! Plus my regular Thursday day when my daughter works! However the little ones are arriving again in a couple of hours and staying until tomorrow!! Bit of an exceptional time – my daughter’s mother in law would normally have done at east one of the weekends but has been quite ill and it coincided with the start of “wedding season” and children weren’t invited! By tomorrow afternoon we’ll be needing a stiff drink – we love having them here but are quite exhausted by the end!! Hope you have a lovely relaxing weekend! 🙂

Oh that’s no good – it’s certainly a wonderful place to unwind in. You can fly to Bergamo too not just Milan Malpensa but then it is a bit of a drive to get to Como. Fingers crossed you can get there before too long! 🙂

Do you thing you really have to rent a car if you want to enjoy this part of Italy ? It’s impossible to do it by public transport ?

No we didn’t rent a car Gin and you can do it by public transport. We organised a car transfer from Milan to our base at Menaggio beforehand because we had a lot of luggage and the hotel organised the transfer for us en route back again. It was expensive but when we checked not much more than a local taxi would have been. However it’s possible to get to Como by train from both Malpensa and Bergamo. You can get up the east side of the lake by train all the way up to Tirano and through to Switzerland and catch ferries up and down the lake from Como City (including fast boats). The west side is ferry only as no train goes up this leg of the lake. The ferries were a great option and were reasonably priced – from memory a 6 day pass for the central villages (eg Menaggio, Bellagio, Varenna, Tremezzo and Lenno) was about 84 Euros per person and a small supplement to go further up to Colico in the north and Como City in the south. Obviously you can buy day passes too. We did a 1 day coach trip through a local travel agent up to St Moritz and back via Chiavenna (from memory it goes once a week on Mondays). So yes you can manage easily without renting a car round Lake Como – you just have to factor in time for the travel to and from the airport!
