Le Chic En Rose

Diaries of an independent traveller

On our last couple of trips down to the South West Cape Region, we’ve stayed in the pretty settlement of Yallingup. Perched on the hillside with spectacular views of the Indian Ocean, it has a small local population (just over 1000) swelled during holiday seasons by visitors drawn to the surfing beaches and regional attractions such as the caves, wineries and art galleries.

Yallingup is an aboriginal place name meaning, “Place of the caves” but it is also referred to as the “Place of Love”. It certainly draws lovers of the ocean to admire its wild surf and  rolling waves and many famous surfers have surfed the waves of the beaches in the area including Yallingup, Smiths and Injidup.

However it is surprisingly family friendly with a more tranquil and calm lagoon perfect for snorkelling and swimming in the warmer months of the year. There is also an excellent children’s playground on the front overlooking the beach.

Although there are plenty of holiday homes and accommodation in the form of a hotel/pub (Caves House), holiday apartments (Seashells) and a caravan park, there aren’t many eateries in Yallingup itself (more about the pub/hotel next week). There is however an excellent local bakery, open daily except Tuesdays, which has a distinct German flavour. The Yallingup Gugelhupf takes its name from the distinctive cake associated especially with the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef and King of Hungary (reigned 1848 to 1916). He had the crown shaped cake (baked in special moulds, which creates an even temperature during baking) for his daily breakfast. The “King Of Cake” has become popular not only in Austria but Switzerland and Germany as well. The French also created the “Kugelhopf”, which contains walnut and speck (though I found many different versions when I did a google search!). The bakery in Yallingup has made the cake its signature dish, which can be enjoyed with all the local jams and chutneys produced in the region. They also make delicious breads freshly baked on the premises and we picked up a couple of their sourdough loaves to take back home to Perth with us.

We love the relative isolation of Yallingup, although a few kilometres down the road is the larger township of Dunsborough, which has a wider range of shops and restaurants. We feel very “away from it all” in only a few days in this part of the world and had a wonderful time exploring the attractions of the region (Canal Rocks, Cape Lavender, Cullens, Woody Nook and Bunker Bay to name just a few). More about our Yallingup base to follow in Part 2 next week!

  1. Looks beautiful Rosemary- those crashing waves and that sandy beach are wonderful. Love the idea of the German bakery too – you can’t beat German bread and other baked goodies in my opinion.

    1. It’s mesmerising to watch those waves Joy – this is on the Indian Ocean side of Cape Naturaliste where the surf is much stronger (Bunker Bay, which I did last week is round the tip of the Cape in the calmer waters of Geographe Bay). Yes we love all the German baked goods and especially the lovely breads – sourdoughs and ryes are my favourites in fact that’s what we tend to eat most of the time when we have bread. The Gugelhupf is such a quaint find in this location!

    1. Yes really hope you can get down to the South West on your next trip westwards Ruth – am sure you would love it ( you would need a car but it’s no problem to hire one). Yallingup is a lovely spot 😀

So I’ve just written about a road trip my now-husband and I took up the west coast of WA. When we were planning it, it was a toss up as to whether we went North from Perth or South down to the Margaret River. We chose the North, but have sworn we must go back to see the Margaret River one day. This confirms it! What a beautiful place, thanks for sharing the photos and helpful local information too.

    1. Thanks Rachel that’s great to hear! I really hope you can get down to the Margaret River area one day. It’s so beautiful 🙂 I will be heading across soon to check our your post on your trip up north from Perth. I’ve only been as far as Lancelin even though we’ve lived here for many years!! Will be interested to read about how you got along – good timing that our posts have coincided!

The beach you looks wonderful. Even if it seems a bit too cold for take a swin or lay down, it is really beautiful. The bakery is very sweet as well. 🙂

    1. Yes we actually prefer it in the winter months Hanne (it’s also cooler here in spring and autumn than it would be a bit further north). Of course it’s not so good if you want to swim or sunbathe at this time of year. We loved the bakery – it looks so cute and the breads were delicious (plus they make great cakes too though we didn’t actually sample them on this visit) 🙂

Oh, please take me away from it all, Rosemay! It’s so grey here today 😦

    1. Happy to oblige Jo! We are having an Indian summer (though March is still very warm so it’s not unusual). I am in the process of organising everything for our trip – we leave 4 weeks today so have been starting to look at the long range forecast for the Uk (not exactly promising) so will have the usual challenge of trying to bring enough warm clothes without overloading the suitcase! Am heading your way soon for a catch up! Hope all’s well apart from the gloomy weather! 🙂

Oh, don’t tell me about the weather! 😦 😦 I only look a few days ahead because it can change so much. April will be glorious, don’t you think? I’m spending a little of it in the Algarve, anyway 🙂 🙂

        1. Yes I know the forecasts are totally unpredictable apart from a day or so ahead! I hope April will be glorious – the sun has some warmth in it by then if it manages to get through the clouds! The Algarve will be lovely at that time of the year 😃
