We first arrived in Perth just over 25 years ago. It was the middle of spring – more like a very hot northern summer! Perth was a profusion of colours as flowers and trees began to bloom in the warmth of the spring sunshine. The gorgeous purple hues of the flowering Jacaranda trees especially caught my attention. I had never seen anything like them before and ever since then it has become a spring highlight when they first start to appear in late October. In fact they are not native to Australia at all originating in Central and South America (see here for more details). However they flourish in the warm Australian climate and so many people wrongly assume they are native. The Jacarandas were just starting to come out last month when we had friends from the Uk visiting but they are really at their best right now in November. Here are a selection of photos taken recently in and around Perth of the gorgeous Jacaranda trees currently in bloom!

Hope the jacarandas have brought a splash of colour to your day Anabel. I guess spring seems rather a long way off now but you do have a “wintry” Christmas to look forward to. Never quite been able to get my head around warm Christmases!

The jacarandas are so lovely! San Diego has a very similar climate to us here in Perth, from what I’ve heard, so am not surprised they have jacarandas there too. I love the purple against the blue skies too – it is stunning as you say! 🙂

They’re stunning Rosemary, I always love when the cherry blossom starts to appear in the UK, a sign better weather (should) be on the way, but the colours here are even more spectacular. Something you could never tire of seeing!

Every year we’ve lived here Joy(we did have a 7 year hiatus in Melbourne before coming back to Perth) I’ve loved seeing the jacarandas in spring! The purple colour is gorgeous! I also love the spring blossoms in the UK too – it’s a softer more subtle colour but so beautiful as well. We’re coming over to the UK next April (and Europe too) so looking forward to seeing all the spring flowers then!

The avenues of jacarandas are lovely Kerry – you see them all over Perth at this time of year and there is even a Jacaranda Festival! They are especially striking against the blue skies too 🙂

I adore jacarandas, so vibrant and especially so near a coral tree! Loved seeing them last year in Sydney and I first fell for them in Johannesburg back in 1974 🙂

So glad you enjoyed the photos Jude! Yes Sydney has many jacarandas and they would suit the South African climate well too. I found some photos online of some in gardens in Lisbon – they should do well there with the Mediterranean climate 🙂 The colour is just gorgeous!! 🙂

Paris has them and that’s quite far north. I wonder if they grow anywhere here?

That’s really interesting Jude I didn’t realise they grew that far north. I looked up some photos of Paris and found jacarandas in them! They might grow in southern warmer parts of the UK then? Perhaps in botanical gardens?

They are wonderful. I haven’t noticed any herein Tassie, I guess it is too cool. Another reason to head to WA at some point. May wait to next spring now.

I think it probably would be a bit too cool for them in Tassie, Ruth, though there may be some in a botanical garden somewhere? They seem to thrive in warmer climes though – apart from Central and South America they are to be found in the Caribbean and also in South Africa and Portugal (where they must have been introduced). Perth is absolutely beautiful in the springtime! 🙂

I love Jacarandas! We have a lot of them here in Athens and I love it when they bloom (mid May)! They thrive in the Mediterranean climate, which is what Australia also has.

Yes the climates are definitely similar Anna, especially here in Perth, which has a true Mediterranean climate. They flower in exactly the opposite seasons then – May is equivalent to November here. They must look stunning in Athens with the blue skies too and the light buildings! 🙂

Am glad you liked the photos – jacaranda trees are so beautiful and vibrant! I think early November would be the best time as they are starting to come out by late October. I have a photo taken on the 23rd October last year and they were a week or so off being in full bloom though some trees were already out. Of course it can vary a little depending on the weather ( we had a warm spring last year). They tend to stay out quite a while so mid November should be fine too. Hope this helps and good luck planning your trip!

Jacarandas are so lovely Rachel! I had never come across them before either until I came to Perth but apparently you can find them in Europe – even in Paris, which I certainly didn’t know about before!

I love looking at them Ting – it’s quite a sight at this time of year when they are blooming. As you can see I love taking photos of them too! I have never noticed their scent before so I went and looked up some information and they are known for their strong scent too. Now I’m going to have to go round trying to smell them all! I remember the lilac trees in England, which have lovely purple colours too and they had a really heady scent almost overpowering at times. My parents had some in their garden and my mum would cut some of the flowers and bring them into the house in vases – I’m getting all nostalgic now! Hope you have a lovely weekend 🙂

Hi Hanne great to see you back in the blogging world! I read your post earlier but for some reason it wasn’t letting me post a comment. I quite understand the blogging break – you sound to have been flat chat with everything!
