If you buy a calendar of Perth there is a good chance that the cover photo will be a wonderful view of the city overlooking the Swan River and the CBD. These photos are usually taken from the Mount Eliza lookout in Kings Park. Perched on top of the hill, the 400 hectare park affords a superb vantage point for miles around over the Swan and Canning Rivers and right across to the Darling Hills in the east.

Needless to say we don’t go there as often as we’d like but recent overseas visitors gave us an excuse to take a wander round there last week. We were as impressed as ever by the superb array of flowers and plants on display in the Western Australian Botanic Garden, which forms a large part of the parkland and the beautiful walking trails there. Since time has again got away from me this week (partly due to a nasty flu bug doing the rounds) I thought sharing some photos of our lovely walk was in order.
The Botanic Garden features a wonderful diversity of flora and there is a wealth of information to read on signs as you wander round. With children’s play areas, a lake, picnic zones, a gift shop, cafes and restaurants plus well maintained war memorials, Kings Park is a must see place if you’re ever in Perth.
Next week hopefully I’ll be back on track to finish my account of our south Bavarian travels! In the meantime here is another stunning photo of the beautiful spring flowers in Kings Park.

That’s a beautiful walk Rosemary and the colours of the flowers are just gorgeous. Especially love the picture of the bridge and the river. How lucky you are that it’s spring, we are loving the blue skies and bright days in Florida, our last full day today so feeling a bit glum about the thought of dark days and chilly weather waiting at home!!! Hope you are feeling better and well enough to have a great weekend.

Thanks Joy it really is a gorgeous walk and stunning place 🙂 The views look even better in the sunshine but it was somewhat of a grey day (by Perth standards) when we visited last week (unusual as October has generally been warm and sunny this year). It’s pouring with rain tonight but at least it’s not too chilly. I know how you must feel – we usually come back to the Uk around early spring fresh from the bright blue skies and sunshine of a WA summer and the colder weather is quite a shock to the system! Sounds like you’ve had a great time in Florida – I’d be very interested to hear about it if you write about it on the blog at some point! I’m feeling much more myself today fortunately – there’s been a nasty bug doing the rounds and our daughter and family got it too and then I picked it up. It’s our daughter’s birthday tomorrow so am glad I’ll be well enough to enjoy the celebratory lunch! Hope you enjoy the rest of your Florida stay and wishing you safe travels back to the UK (maybe some of the sun will follow you!) 🙂

Thanks they are gorgeous aren’t they? I looked up online and it says that they are best treated as a conservatory or greenhouse plant in the UK so probably not outside unless you have a particularly warm and sheltered spot. They like sandy soils too. Having said that it can get very cold during the WA winter nights down to 0 degrees on occasion, so they must survive that though often they are treated as annuals here. Hope that helps! 🙂

Yes Suzanne this is the definitive view of Perth that appears on all the calendars. The city is a bit of a building site at present as they are building a grand new quay down by the river, which will have boardwalks, shops and restaurants. The Botanical Garden is amazing – it’s a wonderful place for a walk and is beautifully maintained 🙂

I know I shouldn’t have taken it in the Perth rush hour Jo – avert your eyes to that and gaze out across the water and beyond! It was lovely and peaceful in the park though! The Narrows Bridge does get a bit crowded with traffic – you don’t notice it as much when you’re gazing out into the distance though!!

Thanks glad you enjoyed the tour! Australia is such a vast place – we live in the south west corner of the continent, which is sometimes missed out by visitors who head to the eastern states first (also well worth seeing!):)

Kings Park is lovely Lisa – if you follow the river down to the west you get to Fremantle. Am sure you would love it if you can get over here! 🙂

Hi Rosemary, hope you’re well. Wow, that view from the top of Kings Park is stunning. I love botannical gardens and I can see why it’s hard not to get to surrounding beauty spots often, as is busy with life! But it’s a great excuse when you have visitors to go to these places.
