A busy week has meant this week’s intended post about our day trip to Southern Bavaria and the Neuschwanstein Castle has gone by the wayside! However it does give me a chance to share some photos of the pretty little town of Fuessen, which nestles at the foot of the Bavarian Alps near the Austrian border. Fuessen is at the end of the rail line from Munich – the journey takes about 2 hours one way. The town centre, however, is often overlooked by tourists heading off to see the nearby castles of Hohen Schwangau – the buses leave from the car park adjacent to the station. We did 2 trips to Fuessen during our Bavarian holiday. The first, in pouring rain, was very different to the glorious day we had later on for our tour round Neuschwanstein. Despite the inclement weather the town had a certain charm even under the gloomy grey clouds. It is also at the southern end of the Romantic Road, which links some of Bavaria’s most picturesque towns. Like many places we came across during our Bavarian travels, it also had plenty of cafes and eateries serving hearty, warming meals perfect for a cold wet day!

Nice jacket 🙂 Rain always adds to the memories – on a day we’d stay inside at home, nothing stops us exploring when in a foreign place. (Apart from a typhoon in Hong Kong, of course)

Thanks Ken I certainly needed it to stay well rugged up! Was in the throes of the flu at this stage too and would never have ventured out if I’d been home but as you say when on holiday you just have to get out and about! We found a lovely little restaurant and headed in for some hearty soup – it was the Bavarian equivalent of chicken soup for the soul! 🙂

Even in the rain this little place looks gorgeous Rosemary. What better reason to cozy up in a little cafe/restaurant to dry off and feast on some wonderful Bavarian food, that sounds perfect to me!!

It was a lovely little place Joy – in a way the rain added to the charm as we could shelter in the gorgeous cafes and warm up! Many people just head straight off to the castles such as Neuschwanstein but it ‘s well worth stopping by in Fuessen for a while. Think you’d love it here! Hope you’re having a great time in sunnier climes! 😃

My son has just started German at school Rosemary and Neuschwanstein is one of many places I want to show him, will definitely stop in Fuessen now that I know what it’s like!! We are so enjoying the sunshine here, I can’t tell you how much, it’s been perfect. Hot but bearable and not at all humid. We’re not missing the nippy UK autumn one bit!

That’s wonderful Joy – you will have such a great time showing him around some of the German destinations and attractions! It really helps with language studies to visit the countries. I had no real interest in German, though I did it for 2 years at school, but since we’ve been going there on holiday I’m really enjoying studying it at night classes now! Glad to hear you’re having a wonderful time in Florida it certainly will be nicer than gloomy mornings and days drawing in back home (think the UK clocks go back tomorrow night so it will get darker then in the afternoons). Enjoy the rest of your holidays! 😃

It seems that you have run into a lot of wet weather this year on your travels.
Thanks for posting this, Bavaria is a place that seems to nearly get into my plans but then slips away. I need to make a bigger effort to get there.

Thanks Andrew yes it did seem to rain a lot! Can highly recommend Munich and Bavaria – so much to see and do there and all very accessible 🙂

Would you recommend staying in Munich or somewhere close by? I have found some cheap flights early in the new year.

Sorry for late reply Andrew – has been a busy weekend with overseas guests 🙂 I’d personally recommend staying in Munich as there’s a lot to do there – the Altstadt is a great base but really it’s a very easy city to get around in as the public transport is excellent. If you want to see the castles it might be worth staying a couple of nights in Fuessen as it is a long day trip from Munich and you can really only do one castle per day. We saw Neuschwanstein but I would have liked to see Hohen Schwangau and the museum of the Bavarian kings too (in the same area) but we had to catch the train back to Munich. Good luck with the travel planning!

Thank you! We had a delicious lunch at the Brau Haus – very welcome as we got out of the cold and warmed up with some hearty Bavarian fayre! 🙂

Sometimes a rainy day can be fun–it gives you an excuse to linger in a warm restaurant and watch the world go by.

Yes it’s always enjoyable to sit in a cosy restaurant when it is very cold outside – you really appreciate the warmth and people watching is always fun!

Thanks Meg – yes it certainly was rather a poor day weather wise! We could hardly see the Alps in the mist and rain but it was a charming interlude and a pretty place. Glad you like the photos! 🙂

I loved its character and charm Hanne though it was rather cold on the day we went! The cafes and restaurants were lovely and warm though and the Bavarian hospitality wonderful 🙂

I was so interested to read about your train ride on Deutsche Bahn! We took a couple of trips down from Munich to Fuessen, one just to see the town and the other passing through en route to Neuschwanstein. The weather was so different – the first time we couldn’t see the Alps at all until we arrived in Fuessen due to the rain and cloud. The next time we could see the beautiful mountains all the way from Munich! Thanks for following my blog too! I’m also following yours and look forward to reading your other posts 😃

No we didn’t but there were quite a few hotels around the place, which looked very nice. There also looked to be a number of holiday apartments too. We felt it would be a lovely place to spend a couple of nights or so if we go back to that area ( which we hope to do at some point)
