I was invited recently by Ting from My Travel Monkey to take part in her “Holiday Snapshots” series. It’s a great format – Ting interviews bloggers about a favourite holiday and includes some special snapshots. I chose to do our recent trip to Munich and Bavaria and it was very hard to choose only a few photos! To read the full “Le Chic En Rose” interview head over to Ting at Holiday Snapshots #38 Munich. In the meantime here is a montage of some of my favourite Munich memories.
We visited the Residenz, the magnificent home of the Wittelsbachs, the imperial family who ruled over the Bavarian lands from 1180 to 1918.
If I had to pick a highlight (and there were many) it would be the wonderful day we spent in the Bavarian Alps visiting the stunning Neuschwanstein Castle – a creation dreamt up by the so-called Mad King Ludwig, Ludwig II of Bavaria. Mlle, our daughter, had joined us from London by this point and after some inclement weather the previous few days, we were rewarded with a perfect, sunny spring day for our day trip from Munich.
Talking of holidays, Monsieur Le Chic and yours truly are heading off after the weekend for a short break at Yallingup, down in the beautiful south west of WA. Mobile and internet coverage is sporadic in those parts so I’ll be offline for a little while. However I’ll have plenty of photos and stories to share on my return as well as finishing off my German series. If you missed my previous posts on our Munich and Bavarian trip you can find them here!
I’ll leave you with a photo of the pretty streets of the Munich Altstadt at night – we stayed right in the heart of this lovely area and since it was still crisp and cold in the evenings we often had the streets more or less to ourselves. This street was one of the little ones leading off the Marienplatz – the tower of the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) is in the background.

Really enjoyed reading about your German trip Rosemary, not surprised Neuschwanstein was a highlight!! Looking forward to reading about this upcoming holiday too, safe travels and hope you have a wonderful time.

Thanks Joy – we loved Munich and fortunately by the time we went to Neuschwanstein we were getting over the flu bug that we’d had earlier on in our stay! I really want to go back some day and do the other “Ludwig” castles too. The Linderhof gets great reviews – I think that’s more like a mini Versailles whereas Neuschwanstein is a rather over the top homage to Wagner !! It has such a perfect setting high up in the Alps 🙂 Looking forward to having a few days break away – the south west part of WA is one of my favourite places 🙂 Hope you’ve had a good week and wishing you a great weekend 🙂

Thanks Ruth – I can highly recommend Munich and Bavaria as travel destinations! Munich was a great base too – lots to see and do in the city and accessible to the beautiful Bavarian countryside with lakes and mountains nearby too 🙂 These photos just give a small flavour of the place 🙂

You’re very welcome 🙂 I still have some more posts to do on our Munich trip and will do a longer post about Neuschwanstein at some point. I know some people find it touristy and of course it does get very busy. We weren’t there in high season though which I’m sure made a difference. We all thought it was an amazing place and you can’t beat the setting in the mountains! I reckon poor Ludwig has not always had a great press over the years though nowadays the Bavarians are very proud of his achievements!

Thanks Laia 🙂 Yes it was lovely just being able to wander round at night without too many people about! It would be a different story in the height of the season and especially Oktoberfest! Just back from Yallingup so will put a few photos up and catch up on the blog over the next few days – I haven’t been on the internet for a while! Happy travels 🙂

Thanks Constance! Am glad you enjoyed the Munich photos and yes the architecture is amazing I could have wandered round the streets of the Altstadt for hours! I think it would be packed during Oktoberfest – so happy we were there in April instead, as it’s just before the tourist season gets busier. Thanks also for following Le Chic En Rose! I loved reading your posts too especially about Chamonix and the cable car! Am happy to have met via #MondayEscapes 🙂

Loved Munich Gin and would happily go back there again. It wasn’t an overwhelming place at all, had so much history, quaint buildings, museums and gorgeous parks. Hopefully the snapshots give you an introductory feel. Of course Allane at Packing My Suitcase (and #MondayEscapes with Ting) writes a lot about her adopted home town of Munich too! We also found it a great base from which to travel round Bavaria – we did several great day trips! 🙂

I know Allane is living there, she made me want to visit munich around xmas to be able to wander around all the xmas markets disseminate around the town 🙂
