A brief hiatus this week from my Bavarian travel series but still with a German theme. Winter has well and truly arrived here in Perth and temperatures have plummeted. It got down to 2 degrees on Tuesday morning, which makes the news here much like it does in the Uk when it climbs to 20 degrees or above! Last Sunday we headed in to the city centre for my weekly German evening class’s mid year social get-together. Naturally we went to a restaurant with a German theme namely, Brotzeit, a new bar and restaurant, which opened its doors in the CBD earlier this year.

Brotzeit is part of an international chain currently based in the Asia Pacific region with the Perth city one being the first in Australia and I was uncertain what to expect. It turned out to be an excellent choice, especially on a wild and wet winter’s day. The food was authentic but toned down a bit for Australian tastes. Whereas in Bavaria I was served a quarter of a duck that must have come from the largest duck in Germany, here the portions were a bit more manageable – German with a modern twist. Monsieur Le Chic tucked into his Nuernberger sausages with sauerkraut, roesti and vegetable accompaniments whereas I went with the spatchcock (small chicken), potato salad and a simply delicious sauerkraut flavoured with orange and cranberry.
The beers were authentic – according to the Brotzeit’s web page :
“All beers served at Brotzeit® are brewed according to the German Purity Law of
1516, 100% natural, made with pure spring water and imported from Germany”
One of our party noted that the correct beer was served on the matching beer mat – all very organised! Monsieur Le Chic sampled the dark wheat beer from Munich’s Paulaner brewery whereas I selected a glass of the Burg Layer Schlosskapelle Silvaner Kabinett wine, which according to the menu is “light bodied with a fresh, slightly floral nose, accompanied by subtle green apple, white peach, honey, tea and lime flavours”. I can’t say I noticed all these flavours but it was certainly tasty and packed a fruity punch!
You will find Brotzeit tucked away in a laneway off 140 Willian Street in the city centre (just behind Jamie’s Italian). If you’re coming in by train it’s just a couple of minutes’ walk from Perth city station taking the William Street exit. The atmosphere was convivial and the place was packed out – bookings are essential!
Certainly warming winter food has been the order of the day all this week. It was bitterly cold on my morning walks though you’d never believe it from the photos – Perth is simply beautiful on clear crisp winter days!

That blue sky looks amazing Rosemary, like you say hard to believe that it’s cold and winter time. Love the look of Brotzeit and I’m drooling over that food – wish this chain would come to the UK!!

It is deceptive Joy as it looks like it should be hot – these clear winter days are so beautiful here but we do need more rain and apparently there’s some on the way this week. At the moment Brotzeit is in the Asia Pacific region such as Singapore, Hong Kong and China. There’s another one opening in the southern suburbs of Perth soon so there’ll be 2 here – I’m not sure how far they plan to expand but it’s an excellent and highly popular concept for a restaurant chain!

It feels a bit weird so see a post about winter 😉 It’s kind of crazy to know that they import the water to make the beer !!! It must cost a lot of money to do that. Have a nice weekend ! Yes we’re always back to front here with the reverse seasons! Germans are very particular about their beer and the restaurant will want to get it right to maintain the high standards – their menus stress how they use authentic ingredients and serve authentic beers and wines! Don’t stress re the email just when you get the chance and enjoy your holiday in Scotland too! Have a great weekend 🙂

Prost! We are lucky enough to have a German brewery in Glasgow which brews to the same purity laws and serves hearty German food. It does tours and I keep meaning to book one. Some day!

Yes Anabel you’ll have to book a tour round the brewery or go there for a traditional meal one day- German breweries are becoming very popular round the world! Enjoy your weekend 🙂

I have eaten there a few times, it’s very good. There are now 3 breweries you can tour in Glasgow and I haven’t done any. It would make a change from distilleries of which I’ve visited several.

Depends on your perspective Andrew – it’s funny how quickly you acclimatise to a warmer climate! I know I get teased when I’m back in Yorkshire – my family seem to think it’s mild when it gets above freezing!

I thought it quite apt that we’d gone to a German themed restaurant in Perth when I was writing up about our German travels! Brotzeit is getting great reviews here. Hope you enjoy the sunshine this week sounds like it’s going to be quite hot in the UK! 🙂

Yikes that is cold for you Aussies, I am sure my son will be shivering in his new home in Fremantle! I don’t think it gets that cold on the east coast, although he did live in Canberra for a while which does get very cold. I was in Perth during August 12 years ago and it was a lovely, blue sky day, but the rest of WA had been quite damp the week previously!

It is a bit of a myth that Perth doesn’t get cold in the winter time – we have a Mediterranean climate here not tropical! Obviously it’s nowhere near as cold as Canberra, which is often freezing in winter time but they are well equipped for the cold with central heating and houses that are built to withstand the chill. Here the houses are built to keep the summer heat out so they can get very cold during the winter months. Last week was even colder – it got down to 0 degrees one night where we live (north of the city) and there was ice covering the cars that had been left outside including our daughter’s (it was like being back in the Uk!). We have had very cold nights for a while now (colder than many parts of the east) but the day time temperatures warm up to high teens or even 20, which is deceptive as it’s so cold overnight so it takes a while to warm up! The winters have been getting drier here these past few years so the skies are clearer, which means slightly above day time temperatures but much colder ones at night. This weekend it’s going to rain a lot so the nights will be a bit warmer (maybe 9 or 10) but it will only get up to the mid teens during the day. We actually put a wood burner in our kitchen/family room area at the end of last winter as the house felt so cold (we already had a gas heater and reverse cycle air con/heating upstairs) but it wasn’t sufficient. We have had the wood fire lit most nights recently! Fremantle is lovely especially in the summer as they get the sea breeze, the Fremantle Doctor, coming off the ocean there first (we’re near the coast too but further up so we also benefit from the sea breeze). I was just down in Fremantle last week with some overseas visitors – it’s about 40 minutes drive from us but always a lovely trip down there 🙂

Thank you for the information. Sounds like a similar climate to the Cape in South Africa, though with those temperatures dropping to 0 and dry clear winters, it is moving more towards an Eastern Cape temperature. I used to live in Cape Town and also Johannesburg where in winter you started off with jackets and jumpers and slowly stripped off to a T-shirt through the day, but by 4 pm it was cold again. And who says there is no climate change!

Yes I’ve heard that Perth shares a similar Mediterranean style winter to the Western Cape in South Africa. It’s a bit the same here – you start off in your warm jackets, jumpers, scarves etc in the morning and then you gradually remove the layers until about 4pm when it gets cold again. Recently I’ve found it rather cold during the day though. It’s definitely been changing a bit in recent years becoming drier and hence cooler especially during winter nights. We have heavy rain on the way though from tomorrow onwards!
